The Wycliffe International Cookbook is an absolute MUST have for anyone living overseas. It has hundreds of recipes and gives hacks, tips, tricks, and substitutions when ingredients aren’t available in your area. It covers items that you may be accustomed to buying at the store and have never made before. There are also pages that detail food safety, food borne illnesses and their symptoms, water purification, pest control, and even how to cook in a hole in the ground. It also explains how to can different foods and has select foods from around the world.
I have used it extensively where I live in rural Uganda and have found it a valuable resource. My copy is so worn out I’m soon going to need to buy a new one.
The kindle is another missionary must have. If you are going to study to show yourself approved, that means being a reader. There is a wealth of high quality Christian literature that will aid you in your missions work, but there’s no way you are going to be able to carry all those books with you. The Kindle solves that problem. With a simple WiFi connection, you can purchase and download the books you want to read directly to your Kindle. No waiting for a package to be shipped to you (and who knows if it will ever make it), no losing your books due to termites or humidity, and the Kindle has enough storage capacity to hold more than you can probably read in several years.
My Kindle absolutely keeps me sane. There are times that my self-care looks like slipping away into a good books and forgetting the challenges of ministry and living environment for a while. I can read stories that are set in my home culture, which grounds me and wards off the homesickness. I carry my Kindle with me absolutely everywhere so I never waste time and I never get bored.
I bought one of these travel adaptors several years ago and its still going strong. It’s not only an adaptor but also a step down if you are traveling with 110 V electronics like laptops or phones that you don’t want to fry when plugging them in to 220 V power sockets.
It has 4 USB ports built in right on the side so you can charge many things at once. The various plugs make it adaptable to most power sources round the world. It’s pretty compact and easy to travel with and I always grab it and throw it in my suitcase and don’t have to worry about the power situation wherever I am.
